This is not the biggest tree, I have a pciture of it on the next 'page'.
Meares Island Big Tree Trail (unguided)
1.5 km (1 mile) to the end of Boardwalk and back;1.5 hrs. The Longer 3.2 km 'Loop Trail' takes about 2.5 hrs.
Take a short cruise to Meares Island for an unguided walk on the incredibly beautiful Big Tree Trail. The boardwalk winds through the lush old growth temperate rain-forest highlighting some of Canada's biggest (some over 6 meters dia.) and oldest trees estimated to be between 1,500 & 2,000 years.
You will never get lost on the relatively easy-stroll Boardwalk. However there are several stairs, the steepest has hand rails with a 30 ft. descent. Kids of all ages love going inside the massive hollow 5.96 meter ‘Hanging Garden Tree’. Hiking briskly to the end of the Boardwalk and back to the boat dock takes about 40 minutes to cover, however, most folks spend 1.5 hr. on the boardwalk to ensure a lasting experience. Be sure to bring your camera! Dogs should be leashed.
Beyond the boardwalk is the '3 km Loop-Hike'. It is on the forest floor and is often considered difficult. This is a Rainforest, when its wet we advise to bring your gum-boots. In order to make the most of your adventure (and not worry about getting lost) we recommend bringing your cellphone (reception is adequate) and also downloading the GPS 'Big Tree Trail' Map. You will also be given an orientation map of the 3.2 km Loop-trail which usually takes about 2.5 hrs to complete. .
